Welcome to Alconbury Weston
The Ford in the village of of Alconbury Weston, Huntingdonshire
The village and parish of Alconbury Weston in Huntingdonshire.
The brook at Alconbury Weston flows across the green and through
the middle of the hamlet, stone work from the old bridge was said to
have come from the Coppingford's medieval church but that has since
been replaced by a modern steel and concrete bridge that has no
character at all.
The hamlet at Alconbury Weston has a few 17th century cottages, and
a we moat in Hermitage Wood, but it has no church, its people
walking across the meadows to the church in Alconbury.
A mile away the Great North Road joins the old Roman Rod of Ermine
Street at Alconbury Hill, where there is a high and beautiful
milestone crowned with a finial and railed around. On this hill
stood the gibbet on which James Matcham was hanged. It is a name
that everyone here once knew, for it comes from a story which began
in Alconbury, Became a legend of Salisbury Plain and even found its
way into the Ingoldsby Legends.
Alconbury Weston is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey.
